The Center was organized as an institute of Thoracic Surgery in 1956 by the initiative of outstanding surgeon Aleksandr N. Bakoulev and was renamed as the Institute for Cardiovascular Surgery (1961) and as of the same name Center (1993). Nowadays it is one of the largest Centers for Cardiovascular Surgery in the world. Center provides high quality compassionate patient care and community services to people with congenital and acquried heart diseases, ischemic heart disease, life threatening arrhytmias, terminal heart failure, and all cases of vascular disorders.
The Center is offering noninvasive and invasive, medical and surgical, pediatric and adult care. For many years we have set the standard in diagnosing, treating and educating patients with cardiovascular diseases.
The highest amount of cardiovascular operations on the neonates and babies under one year of life annually is performed here.
We use the Telemedicine Consultations to guide the physicians and their patients from the regions of Russian Federation and from abroad with complex cases of cardiovascular disorders. Centers Structure

Diagnostic Features
9:00-17:00 AM (From Monday to Friday)
All advanced technologies and procedures are available to perform the complete range of diagnostic tests to determine in patient with cardiovascular disease, the type of disease, the severity, and the most effective treatment methods.
The tests listed to the left are categorized by the type of testing or technology used. For example:
• Electrocardiograph tests: use the electrocardiogram to evaluate the electrical activity generated by the heart at rest and with activity.
• Nuclear Imaging including positron-emission tomography: is a method of producing images by detecting perfusion in different parts of the body after the administration of a radioactive tracer material.
• Ultrasound Tests: uses ultrasound, or high frequency sound wave, to create graphic images of the heart's structures, pumping action, and direction of blood flow.
• Radiographic Tests: use x-ray machines or very high tech machines (CT, MRI) to create pictures of the internal structures of the chest
• Invasive Testing include angiography or electrophysiology (EPS). For example inserting catheter into the blood vessels of the heart and performing coronarography we get the full information about the coronary arteries. EPS allowes to diagnose the type and location of arrhythmia and to ablate it.
• Laboratory Tests: include a number of blood tests used to diagnose and monitor treatment for heart and vessel diseases.
• Procedures: include procedures used to treat heart disease
An important aspect of diagnosing and treating heart disease is the physical exam. The exam helps the doctor to determine what type of diagnostic test or procedure is necessary to fully diagnose the heart or vessels diseases.
The Center has all necessary conditions for patient’s comfortable in-hospital stay. Patients are put in four-, two-, one-bed wards and luxe waeds. Relatives can use the guest house or the room for mothers and relatives located in the treatment block.
The are several dining halls and cafes in the Center. Telephone network operates round-the-clock. Patients are provided with telephone, TV set and other servicies on individual order.
