Within almost forty years at the Bakoulev CCVS and for thirty years in the Administration, Leo A. Bockeria initiated opening of numerous Center’s departments, including:
- Interventional Arrhythmology Department;
- Noninvasive Arrhythmology Department;
- Reconstructive Surgery of Neonates and Infants Under One Year of Age;
- Neonatal Cardiology Department;
- Cardiomyopathy Department;
- Department of Surgical Treatment of Heart Diseases with Progressive Pulmonary Hypertension;
- Department of Urgent Surgery of Premature Infants and Babies Under One Year of Age;
- Center of Perinatal Cardiology;
- Department of Minimally Invasive Treatment of Ischemic Heart Disease;
- Department of Electrophysiology;
- Department of Terminal Heart Failure Treatment;
- Blood Transfusion Department
and others.
Prof. Bockeria largely contributed to the foundation of the Bakoulev CCVS of RAMS and particularly of the Center’s Bourakovsky Institute. During the period from 1997 to 2000 he designed the infrastructure of the newly built institutes of the Center, completed the building of the largest world’s cardiovascular complex at Rublevskoye shosse, 135 in Moscow, equipped it with most up-to-date facilities and organized full-scale scientific and medical activity. Parallel to this, the infrastructure of the Institute for Coronary and Vascular Surgery at Leninsky prospect, 8 was constituted.
The Center continues to grow steadily with new departments being opened and new technologies developed implemented. This includes laboratories of transmyocardial laser revascularization, cardioplegia, cell technologies, treatment quality, of standards development and optimization of diagnosis and treatment processes in cardiovascular surgery.
Furthermore, the structure of such diagnostics departments as X-Ray Diagnostics Dep., Nuclear Diagnostics Dep., Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics Dep., is constantly improving and expanding.
Department of History of Cardiovascular Surgery with a Museum and a Department of Intellectual Property with a publishing house were opened at the Center. To provide for even more effective working process under new economic circumstances, a Department of Economic Analysis in Cardiovascular Surgery was founded. A Laboratory for Treatment Quality Control was opened.
Department of Biomedical Technology and Production Department with a Laboratory of Electrical Stimulation were opened and function successfully. Perinatal Cardiological Center and Scientific Advisory Telemedicine Center were founded. Group for Organization of Congresses, Conferences and Symposiums was established. Being excellently equipped, with its conditions for healthcare provision and having a sufficient number of highly qualified staff, the Complex today can hardly be rivaled by any other Center in the world.
Leo A. Bockeria has organized an active system for training of young specialists: residents and candidates of sciences. In the mid-70s of the XXth century Department of Training and Continuing Education was established, which played a significant role for the training of own personnel and in preserving Center’s capacities.
Under the guidance of Leo A. Bockeria more than 270 doctoral and Ph.D. theses were prepared and defended. Many of his students became corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, professors, 8 of them were given the Lenin Komsomol Prize, 1 was awarded with the USSR State Prize and 5 with the State Prize of the Russian Federation.
Being the Head of Cardiovascular Surgery Department at the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University and at the Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, Head of Cardiovascular Surgery and Interventional Cardiology Department of the Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry, academician L.A. Bockeria places high emphasis on training of young specialists for cardiovascular surgery centers all over Russia.
Leo A. Bockeria is among the authors and project designers of a pilot Telemedicine Project “From Moscow to the Regions of Russia”. Within the framework of this project, specialists of the Bakoulev Center’s consult doctors at the local level using the whole range of diagnostic information. Today, this project allows to organize regular remote consulting sessions, including live footage from operating rooms, with doctors from 16 Russian regions and Belarus taking part in the project.
Leo A. Bockeria initiated organization of Annual Scientific Sessions and from 1998 – of annual All-Russian Congresses of Cardiovascular surgeons at the Bakoulev CCVS of RAMS.
Finally, for more than 10 years the Center under the guidance of prof. Bockeria convenes a number of charity events, which allowed saving of thousands of lives. These include such actions as “Touch a Child’s Heart”, “Healing Through Art”, “The Heart of the Bolshoi”, as well as charity actions at orphanages, military units etc.. Leo A. Bockeria actively supports medical programs of the Russian Children’s Foundation and participates in the realization of its ethical-educational initiatives. As the President of the Russian Health League – a non-commercial organization – and the Head of the Commission for promoting of a healthy lifestyle at the Public Chamber of the Russian President, Leo A. Bockeria has already contributed much to the realization of their purposes and will continue this mission in future.
