In 1968 Leo A. Bockeria defended his Ph.D. thesis and afterwards his doctoral dissertation titled “Hyperbaric Oxygenation in Cardiac Surgery” in 1973. In 1994 he was elected a valid member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, specialty “Cardiac Surgery”. Lenin Prize winner (1976), laureate of State Prizes of the USSR (1986) and the Russian Federation (2002), Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation (1994).
Leo Bockeria’s key directions of scientific activity:
Surgical treatment of heart rhythm disorders and ischemic heart disease, surgery for congenital and acquired heart diseases, surgery for terminal heart failure, hyperbaric oxygenation, minimally invasive surgery, use of laser in heart surgery, employment of computers and mathematical modeling in cardiac surgery, experimental modeling of pathologic changes in cardiovascular system, targeted planning and methodology of science.
For more than 20 years Leo A. Bockeria has actively participated in the targeted planning at the Center. During this period more than 10 targeted research programs were successfully implemented, allowing gradual developing of the research from theoretical level to its clinical introduction on the final stage. Today there are 15 more targeted programs being processed at the Center devoted to vital problems of cardiovascular surgery.
Leo A. Bockeria is author of more than 1000 publications, of which more than 100 – in overseas editions, including more than 50 monographs, more than 20 guides and tutorials. He has written a number of problematic monographs, among them special emphasis should be given to the “Guidelines for Cardiovascular Surgery”, recently reprinted for the second time.
