In 1980 on the initiative of Vladimir I. Bourakovsky and Leo A. Bockeria in Bakoulev CCVS USSR AMS was founded the Young Specialists Training Department. The necessity of its creation has been dictated by fast development of cardiovascular surgery, the major element of which is the preparation of the highly skilled staff. The head of the Department became Bagrat G. Alekyan (nowadays a corresponding member of RAMS), who worked in this post till 2000.
Young specialists were trained in clinical Ordinatura (Initial Residency) and Aspirantura (Postgraduate Study), according to position of the Ministry of the General and Professional Education about clinical Ordinatura and Aspirantura. Training programs were offered in «cardiovascular surgery», «cardiology», «anesthesiology and intensive care». The plan of training which included carrying out of seminar and practical employments, perusal of lectures by leading scientists of the Institute, reception of examinations at the end of training has been developed. With 1989 has begun the training program in doctoral study.
The system of preparation of various qualification specialists long time allowed completely keeping potential of the Institute for Cardiovascular Surgery, to form the basic supervising and professional staff. However creation of the Center for Cardiovascular Surgery, formation in its structure of three Institutes, and also further development of cardiovascular surgery and adjacent specialties, has dictated the necessity of reorganization of the Young Specialists Training Department. Thus, according to the order of the Director of Bakoulev CCVS, the academician of RAMS Leo A. Bockeria, in 1997 the additional posts of the main specialists of the department on the specialty of «cardiovascular surgery», «cardiology», «anesthesiology, intensive care and extracorporeal circulation» were formed.
In 2000 the Young Specialists Training Department was reorganized in the Department of Training and Continuous Education, the head of which became Professor Boris E. Narsiya.
The main directives of the Department became the supporting scientists and practicing physicians. According to modern international requirements every surgeon operating on the heart, intervention cardiologist and specialists directly involved in this field should have at least 500 hours of continuous education every year that means participation in the congresses, symposia, weekly morning conferences, meetings of the Scientific Society and Academic Council, preparation of reports and articles. The department coordinates with those who want to improve their professional skills in line with international standards. About 200 specialists in initial residency, postgraduate and doctoral studies pass through this department every year.
With 2002 in the Center also available the training programs in 11 specialties: «pathologic anatomy» «nuclear diagnostic» «hematology» and others. Together with the citizens of Russian Federation through the department pass the specialists from more then 30 foreign Countries.
